Mitjan KALIN

Mitjan Kalin is Professor of Tribology and Contact Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Head of the Laboratory of Tribology and Interfacial Nanotechnology and Head of the Department of Tribology and Maintenance Systems. Since 2017 he is an associate professor at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. He focuses on the mechanisms of friction and wear and the phenomena of boundary surface layers on the nanoscale, with a special focus on the lubrication of diamond-like carbon coatings, being one of the field pioneers. He completed his postdoctoral studies at NIST, USA. He has led forty thirty-year projects, mostly international, of which he has coordinated four European projects. He has been editor-in-chief of Lubrication Science (Wiley) for a decade and, since 2018, vice-president of the International Tribology Council, which includes all the national and professional tribology associations worldwide. After two four-year terms as Vice-Dean in 2017-2021, he headed the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana as Dean.
