Stanko STRMČNIK
Dr Strmčnik comes from the school of automatic control and system management founded in Slovenia by Prof. Dr. France Bremšak. His research work was initially focused mainly on mathematical modelling and system identification, and later on various forms of classical and modern control algorithms and non-technical aspects of automation. He saw it as a key challenge to increase the efficiency of the transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice, and he therefore directed his research work, and that of his colleagues with whom he jointly established the Department of Computer Automation and Control (later renamed the Department of Systems and Control), towards areas that would contribute most to the realisation of this goal. His and his colleagues' greatest achievements were in the areas of research and development of combustion process control, tools for computer-aided design of control systems, building blocks for the implementation of control systems, control and optimisation of biological wastewater treatment plants, and an integrated approach to the design and implementation of systems for the control of complex industrial processes.
Together with colleagues, he introduced a holistic approach to the design and implementation of industrial process control systems, highlighting the initial stages of their life cycle and non-technical aspects. The approach significantly influenced the introduction of automation in Slovenia.
